Re: What's next for the Afan Lido
THE fate of Port Talbot's fire-ravaged Afan Lido complex could become clearer by the end of this week.
Council chiefs are expecting the results of a detailed assessment into the state of the buildings within a matter of days.
But they say it is too early to start speculating whether the complex can be salvaged or will need to be demolished and rebuilt.
Council head of partnership and community development Russell Ward told the Post: "The assessment process is nearly complete and we should have some clarity later this week.
"It will then be a case of sitting down, looking at the options and considering the advice we will get.
"In terms of the fate of the building, it is far too early to say."
Initial checks have already revealed the Aquadome pool hall to have been very badly damaged and the concrete structural frame affected.
All the pool features, ceiling and fixtures have been destroyed. Previously sealed asbestos has been exposed in the pool area and the fire debris appears contaminated.
